I love how Maryam describes Bitsy as brave, a quality she doesn't feel she has herself. Perhaps Maryam needs Bitsy's manufactured traditions more than anyone. Since she doesn't feel she fits in anywhere, she needs to create her own traditions. She needs to invent her own place where she can feel at home.
